3-Month-Old Baby Drowns in Chevy Chase; Mother Faces Murder Charges

A mother in Chevy Chase, Maryland, has been charged with the murder of her 3-month-old baby on Sunday.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue responded to a home in the 7300 block of Summit Avenue around 12:15 p.m. after receiving a report of an infant drowning. Upon arrival, emergency responders found the baby unresponsive and transported the child to the hospital, where the infant was later pronounced dead.

Mackenzie R. Colgan, 37, was arrested at the scene and charged with first-degree murder. Court documents reveal that Colgan had told family members she planned to give the baby a bath. However, twenty minutes later, she informed the father, John Volpe, that their child was dead. Volpe found the baby unresponsive in the bathtub and attempted CPR while Colgan called 911.

According to investigators, Colgan confessed that she had planned to end her life and the lives of her family members that morning. She stated that her initial intention was to jump from the second-story window after drowning the baby, but ultimately decided against it and went downstairs to inform Volpe of what had happened.

The investigation is ongoing.
