Wawa Confirms Georgetown Location Closure by Dec. 17

Wawa has confirmed that it will permanently close its Georgetown store at 1222 Wisconsin Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., effective December 17, 2024. The decision was announced by a company spokesperson on Tuesday, following what the company described as “careful evaluations.”

“All associates from this store will be given the opportunity to transfer to nearby Wawa locations,” the company stated in a release to FOX 5. “We appreciate the support of the community over the past few years, but at this point, our long-term plans for this store are no longer viable. This decision was a business choice based on various factors that we regularly assess across all our stores. We are grateful for the community’s support and look forward to continuing to serve them at other nearby locations.”

The closure announcement has left many customers and local workers surprised and disappointed.

“That sucks. Yeah, that’s terrible,” said Javae Graham, a frequent customer. “Hopefully, they put something better here, I guess, but this was a quick and cheap place to grab something to eat. It’s always busy, so I don’t know what kind of business decision this could be.”

Jose Bou, another local worker, echoed similar sentiments. “It’s surprising because it seems like it’s always busy. It’s convenient—whether you’re grabbing a sandwich, a Coke, or gum, it’s a good stop,” he said.

Wawa has not provided further details about the “long-term plans” that factored into the closure. The Georgetown location’s closure adds to a growing list of stores the company has recently shut down in the D.C.-Maryland-Virginia (DMV) area. However, with about 50 Wawa stores still operating in the DMV and Baltimore regions, the company assured that customers have other nearby options.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions from community members, with some questioning the rationale behind closing a seemingly busy and popular location. Despite the closure, Wawa reaffirmed its commitment to serving the region through its remaining stores.
