Teen Who Stomped Elderly Man to Death in DC Gets Maximum Sentence After Taking Selfies
A 13-year-old girl convicted of beating 64-year-old Reggie Brown to death and taking selfies with his lifeless body was sentenced to eight years behind bars. The maximum sentence for someone of her age convicted of second-degree murder in Washington, D.C., the teen will serve time in juvenile detention until she turns 18, followed by prison until she turns 21.
The girl was one of five minors, aged 12 to 15, involved in the brutal attack on Brown in October 2023. At the time of his murder, Brown, who was battling cancer, was walking home when he was assaulted by an unknown man. As the group of girls passed by, they asked if they could join in on the assault because they were bored. One of the girls filmed the incident, which showed the girls stomping on Brown’s head. He later died from blunt force trauma, as confirmed by an autopsy.
At her sentencing, the teen read an apology letter to Brown’s family, expressing regret. “I wish I could start my life over,” she said in court. However, Brown’s sister, Malda Brown, criticized the teen for lacking genuine remorse. “She didn’t show any empathy or sympathy,” Malda said, adding that it saddens her to think of how brutal the girls were. She did, however, express relief that the judge imposed a substantial sentence.
Earlier this year, a 15-year-old girl involved in the murder testified as a key witness for the prosecution. She explained that the group had been hanging out at a skate park when they decided to “find someone to beat up” because they were bored. According to her testimony, they saw a man in a blue coat assaulting Brown, and when she approached him, she asked if they could help. The man reportedly gave them permission to join in.
The 15-year-old pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon in a plea agreement and was sentenced to three years in juvenile detention.
