1997 Silver Spring Shooting Suspect Arrested After 27 Years on the Run

Jose Mauricio Rivera, 58, was extradited to Maryland on December 5, 2024, following his arrest by Salvadoran authorities in April 2023. Rivera is facing charges of second-degree attempted murder and two counts of first-degree assault, according to the Montgomery County Department of Police.

The charges stem from a violent incident on October 9, 1997, when Rivera allegedly shot his estranged wife multiple times in the elevator of her apartment building located in the 8100 block of Eastern Avenue. The attack occurred after the victim had separated from Rivera and obtained a restraining order against him, following allegations of abuse.

After the shooting, Rivera fled the country, prompting an Interpol Red Notice to be issued for his arrest. Salvadoran authorities successfully located and detained Rivera in 2023, where he remained in custody until his extradition to the United States.

Rivera is currently being held at the Central Processing Unit in Montgomery County, where he is awaiting a bond hearing.
