The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) released a statement explaining the circumstances of the incident. “Around 4:30 p.m., MTPD and DCFD responded to Benning Road Station for the report of a person struck by a train. Upon video review, it was determined that an adult male intentionally placed himself on the tracks and was subsequently struck by a train. He was extricated by DCFD and transported by medics to a local hospital in critical condition,” WMATA stated.
Due to the incident, Metrorail suspended Blue and Silver Line service between Stadium-Armory and Capitol Heights during the busy rush hour period. Metro officials arranged for shuttle buses to assist commuters and advised riders to use Metrobus as an alternative to reach their destinations.
